Exactly 50 years ago, the first freestyle frisbee championships took place in Toronto. We believe that freestyle frisbee has its origins as an outdoor sport. That’s why one of the assumptions of this year’s competition is to play outdoors. We will make every effort to ensure that our plan succeeds. As a safeguard, we will have a covered gym in case of bad weather conditions that prevents the games from being held outdoors.
Important point of this year’s championship is to empower all women. Female players have been demonstrating fantastic skills and form of their game for years. To balance both genders, we decided, among other things, to change the generally accepted game schedule. We want to provide women with a large audience, so the women’s division will not be played first in the finals. The name of our city Warsaw has a feminine article in Polish and its symbol is a Mermaid with a sword and shield . She is a woman who symbolically guards our capital.
Another idea of FPAW2024 is to spread the jam during championships. On the last day of our tournament (Sunday) we plan a Frisbee Picnic. There will be workshops for beginners, open jams for residents and a whole day of playing together to promote our sport as much as possible.
We treat the possibility of extending players frisbee holidays in Poland as the icing on the cake and we invite you all to the SandSlash Debki beach tournament at the Polish seaside. It will take place a few days after the end of the championships in Warsaw: August 22-25, 2024. Our plan is to organize shared transport for players from Warsaw to Dębki. You can find more about this in the SandSlash tab.
While Open Pairs allows teams to pair up as they choose, Mixed Pairs teams must include one man and one woman. This male/female dynamic inspires teams to higher levels of creativity and emotion. Routines in this division last 3 minutes and tend to be the most charismatic, balancing male and female strengths and interactive disc relationships in a show that is beautiful, elegant and strong.
With many more men than women entering competitive Freestyle, this division gives women a chance to express their unique styles. Teams are made up of two women. Routines last 3 minutes and showcase women’s power and skill while simultaneously displaying a graceful nuanced approach to freestyle.
Frisbee competition has a history of highlighting gender equality and as such, Open Pairs can be any two people. Routines in this division last 3 minutes and tend to be the most turbo. This division, by having the most teams, creates a „go for broke, all or nothing“ explosive performance. Many consider Open Pairs the most prestigious division to win.
Although a game of throw and catch can be enjoyed by two people, it’s often more fun with even more friends. Open co-op explores this idea with three person teams. Routines last for 4 minutes and exhibit a more complex approach to teamwork and choreography. This three person division allows the opportunity to explore intricate disc exchanges not possible with two person teams.
